Echoes of Power
“Hey! Wake up!”
“Don’t drift off or you’ll never come back!”
Alexandre felt his cheeks heat up and the pain spread slowly as the voice yelled at him to resist the pull of the attractive and comfortable darkness. He tried to open his eyes but they were sealed shut. His whole body was numb and his mind was working in slow motion. What the hell was going on? Who was shouting at him? Why? What was happening? He felt like he was drifting off towards a dark and painless bliss. He was surrendering to it, letting his mind slip away from the pain of consciousness, when he felt a painful jolt of life course through his body. His heart was beating wildly and he opened his eyes, taking in the blinding brightness of the sky above him.
“There you go! Stay with me boy, hold on!” The voice said again with a chuckle.
Alexandre slowly looked down to the person whose voice he was hearing. The first thing he saw was long pony tail of salt-and-pepper hair hanging over a dark blue scarf. Two dark orbs were looking back at him, shining with interest as if studying him and protected by a thin pair of round glasses. Alexandre blinked slowly a couple of times to focus his sight, it wasn’t completely clear yet.
“Taking on three geigers with such a weak spell… are you out of your mind?!” He then asked with a mix of reproach and respect. “Everybody knows they are partially immune to fire… I do have to admit though, that you did quite a nice job taking two of them out. However you would be dead if I hadn’t been there…” He added with a small grin as he pointed behind him where the three creatures had been standing a few moments before.
Alexandre frowned for a moment, looking at the stranger without understanding what he meant. Then he turned his head to look around. There was no other trace of the monsters than three large burn marks on the ground. What the…? He thought as he looked back at the man in front of him. He could be in his early forties, or younger, or older. Alexandre couldn’t tell, his features looked strangely young but the teenager could see the deep wrinkles on his forehead and the grey hair that populated his head here and there. He was about to say something when he felt himself slip away again.
“Oh no you don’t!” Exclaimed the man as he say Alexandre’s eyes start to close.
He put his hand on the teenager’s heart and started muttering words that Alexandre couldn’t quite understand. The teenager felt a sharp pain instantly spread in his chest, as if thousands of needles were being inserted in his internal organ at the same time. This jolted him awake again and he couldn’t help but yell loudly, his voice was instantly cut off however as the man put a hand on his mouth to silence him.
“Shhh! I know it’s painful but hold on! I have to destroy the curse…” The man exclaimed. “If I don’t do this you’ll be dead by tomorrow!” He added almost immediately.
Alexandre tried to calm down but the pain was almost unbearable. He could feel it move all around his chest, slowly retracting as if it was being pulled towards the man’s hand but doing all it could to resist this outside intervention and remain anchored in the teenager’s entrails. Alexandre almost lost track of time again as his mind instinctively numbed itself to protect him. When it finally ended after what seemed like an eternity, he was left panting heavily and shivering on the cold hard ground.
